McCain, Clinton win state battles
For the victors on Saturday, the prize is a jolt of energy in a race where momentum has been short-lived. Republican contenders head to Florida for a January 29 primary, while Democrats focus on next Saturday's primary in South Carolina. Both parties then turn their attention to the critical February 5 "Super Tuesday" round of 22 state contests. Clinton won the Nevada Democratic race, 51% to 45%, with turnout reported to surpass 115,000 voters. "We ran an honest, uplifting campaign in Nevada that focused on the real problems Americans are facing, a campaign that appealed to people's hopes instead of their fears," Obama said in a statement. "That's the campaign we'll take to South Carolina and across America in the weeks to come." South Carolina conservatives McCain's win in South Carolina comes after a win in New Hampshire and was fuelled by support from conservatives, with seven in 10 voters in the state primary describing themselves that way, according to exit polls.

Euroshares open lower on Wall St losses overnight; BP outperforms ...
(Updating with full report) LONDON, Feb. 5, 2008 (Thomson Financial delivered by Newstex) -- Leading European shares fell in opening trade following overnight losses on Wall Street, but BP (TSX:BP'U) outperformed after a raised dividend from the oil and gas giant helped temper disappointment over its fourth-quarter profits. At 9.00 am, the Dow Jones STOXX (OOTC:DJSFF) 50 Index was down 15.67 points, or 0.5 pct at 3,284.68 while the DJ STOXX 600 Index fell 1.88 points, or 0.6 pct to 327.26. 'We galloped off at the races last week and had a substantial rally, but the market is still very concerned about the credit crisis,' said David Buik, a partner at BGC Partners. (NASDAQ:BGCP) BP bucked the downtrend in early trading, up 2 pct as a higher-than-expected dividend payout from the UK oil and gas giant helped temper disappointment over fourth-quarter profits that failed to live up to expectations.
Long road to a livelihood
At first they drove the hour-and-15-minute commute on their own. Then they formed loose car pools to share the burden of the drive and tolls. Eventually some of them decided that even the car pool was too much. And that's where Ben Harvin stepped in. Harvin has worked at GM for 39 years, starting on Broening Highway's assembly line in 1969. When the plant closed, he bought a van (GMC, of course), thinking that he might become a private transportation provider. But the offer to transfer to Delaware came. He took the transfer and figured he might as well take a few friends with him. Now, Harvin and six to eight passengers, depending on the day, meet at the White Marsh Park and Ride at 12:45 p.m. and ride together to Newport. When their shift ends at 10:30 p.m., they climb into the van and head home.
