The operator of American Airlines put a damper on buoyant expectations late last month by warning that weather-related flight cancellations had driven up its unit costs, leading analysts to predict a quarterly loss. That said, AMR is still likely to post its first annual profit in six years amid improving industry fundamentals. See article.

Earnings Outlook: Analysts polled by Thomson First Call forecast a loss of seven cents a share; before AMR's update, it was expected to turn a profit of 53 cents a share. In 2005's fourth quarter, the company posted a loss of $3.49 a share, including more than $1 a share in one-time charges.

Revenue Outlook: Analysts expect $5.5 billion, up from $5.17 billion a year earlier.

Key Issues:

• Cancellations: Snow in Denver and fog in London hampered airlines late in the quarter.

Edwin Coppock, Fed Fund Rates and The Dow

Aha there you are readers, I couldn't see you, hidden behind all that steam rising from the cups of mulled wine. A warm welcome to the last letter for 2007 - did I hear cheers and whoops of delight? Well its to be expected I suppose, I have been a rather grizzly writer over the past 2 years and I know you would prefer to see a more positive outlook.

However, a positive outlook requires positive action to happen now that will help further ahead on the economic road. Alas, I am not seeing too much that gives me cause for hope.

I hope you found time to visit http://www.livecharts.co.uk/livewire/ and read the articles posted. As well as shorter articles covering topical subjects by myself you will find articles written by others too. Its well worth a visit.

As you know I try to peer into the future and divine what the economic outlook has in store for us.

Airbus makes big splash at Air Show

The airline was quite clear about why it chose Airbus over Boeing, said Nick Cunningham, an analyst with Evolution Securities in London. 'The 787-9 wasn't suitable for their needs, and the 787-10 wasn't available. The only aircraft that was available in that class was the 777, but that plane is too old for Emirates. The A-350 now has the market to itself,' he said. Did huge discounts play a role in Airbus's offer to Emirates? 'We can't really know from the outside what sorts of concessions were made. The price of the order is only one part of it. In reality there are a number of concessions that can be made in such a large transaction,' Cunningham said. Ultimately, it really came down to whether Boeing could offer a competitive plane in the time frame needed, and they couldn't, he said. Does Airbus' success at the Dubai Air Show mean that it has clinched the title as 2007 sales champ? 'Airbus had a great Air Show.

Boulder: Impeach Bush?

Boulder's elected leaders are expected to decide next week whether to draft and vote on a resolution calling for the impeachment of President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.

For the past few weeks, activists have been showing up at Boulder City Council meetings, carrying signs, handing out "impeach" pins and asking City Council members to take up such a resolution. Similar measures have passed in cities across the country, including Detroit and Telluride.

Liz Robinson, one of the organizers of the effort, said people hoping to see impeachment proceedings have given congressional Democrats — who won a majority in the fall of 2006 — plenty of time to act.

But since they haven't, she said, locally elected officials should take up the slack.

"Whether or not it's the city's business directly, like potholes, I feel this affects all of us," she said.

Grain shoots higher on USDA reports

Washington, D.C. Commodity prices shot higher today after the government reported that demand for grain is staying strong and last years corn harvest was smaller than previously thought.

The U.S. Agriculture Departments final crop report for 2007 put corn production at 13.1 billion bushels, down 1 percent from the November estimate.

Meanwhile, the government raised its estimate of how much of the corn crop will be used for livestock feed by 300 million bushels. That was the big surprise, the shocker, Don Roose, president of U.S. Commodities Inc.

The report suggests livestock farms are not reducing production despite the soaring cost of feed, he said.
