Radio Talk

Here are some technical feedback from a skeptical reader. I'm no technical expert so if anyone wants to challenge David, feel free:

Mr. Ho —-

A few salient points, requiring only a minimum of research, went missing from your piece on HD Radio:

1) Ibiquity made generous deals with the big radio station owners to get HD broadcasting equipment installed. In turn, radio station owners have additional avenues (i.e., stations or channels) for ad revenue without needing more bandwidth from the FCC.

2) Large radio station owners have proven time and again more stations does not equal more variety. In fact just last week the AJC ran a story on this very subject. True variety only happens when small stations are nourished, something the FCC in recent years has not encouraged.

Your Comments : Qarase warns of bankruptcy

I believe the NCBBF report is our hope for the future to create stability and encourage more investors.

Alan Greenspan the reknown economist a former chairman of the US federal reserves admitted in his recent published book that he being an experienced and successful economist in his long career did not have all the answers to the winds of change in the worlds economy. So? Qarase had his chance and today its Chaudhry. Tomorrow it maybe Ballu Khan.

Afghanistan:Manley Report

The trans-Afghan pipeline remains on hold until it can be built safely through Taliban territory. We find ourselves in a situation where, though we'd like to leave, if we cut our ties and left, the puppet would collapse.

So before we leave we need to create an Afghan army that we can control from afar and that will prop up the Karzai government and secure the region for the US. But it seems we are having trouble finding Afghan recruits to replace us.

But why should we be surprised? Afghanistan is a Muslim nation that has been invaded by infidels bent on imposing their godless values on the people. (Think of Britney Spears or Paris Hilton as poster girls for women's rights and freedoms.)

Why would Muslims surrender their country to agents of the Great Satan? So of course they will fight us.

Transit lines seeking smartest 'smart card'

As public transit authorities move from tokens and tickets to "contactless" cards, two possible futures await riders.

One is a plastic version of the present, where each agency has its own fare card, usable only on its own system. The other future involves mutually acceptable cards, sort of an E-ZPass for transit riders.

Smart cards typically have a computer chip and radio antenna that allow passengers to wave the card at a turnstile and be on their way. The fare is automatically deducted from a preloaded sum or from a bank account.

With widespread interest in smart cards that can work in multiple cities, the fight now is over the best way to do it - bank cards or transit cards. That battle is shaping up to be the transit version of VHS vs. Betamax.
