| Oil prices remain near US$99 a barrel but market seen staying bullish
Oil prices were barely higher Friday from the previous session's close after setting a record above US$100 a barrel overnight on a larger-than-expected drop in U.S. crude stockpiles. Light, sweet crude for February delivery was up 4 cents to US$99.22 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange by midday in Europe. On Thursday, the contract rose as high as US$100.09 a barrel, a trading record, before retreating to settle at US$99.18. In London, Brent crude fell 8 cents Friday to US$97.52 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange. The U.S. Energy Department's Energy Information Administration said Thursday that crude inventories fell 4 million barrels last week, much more than the 1.7 million barrel decline analysts surveyed by Dow Jones Newswires, on average, had expected.

Tuesday Morning Rangers Notes
It should take little more than a brief glance at my most recent piece to determine who falls into which category. Quite an admission coming from somebody whose sports idol growing up during the mid-90's was, in fact, Jason Kidd. Or, for that matter, coming from somebody who was devastated to the brink of tears at the age of nine, when Kidd was dealt to the Phoenix Suns in December 1996. But those days have long since passed. And though I'll always hold a special place in my heart for Kidd, the magic that once upon a time drew me in to the point of downright obsession with the Mavericks is gone. Probably forever. As far as I'm concerned, however, that same magic has just begun with Ian Kinsler and the Rangers. With that bit of sports reminiscing out of the way, onto some of the latest Rangers-related quick hits! ● According to T.R.

Getting Defensive
This year, gold could soar well above $1,000. The most exciting phase of the gold market is ahead. Gold still is cheap. Historically, the average Dow [industrials]-to-gold ratio was about 10 to 1. Now it's 15 to 1. Demand from ETFs is helping drive up prices. These funds now hold more than 865 tons of gold, up 34% from a year ago, and there are more ETFs coming online, including one sponsored by the State Bank of India. India is the biggest end-market for gold. On the supply side, mine production remains weak. South African production has been halved in the past 10 years. Political, environmental and economic issues, plus rising production costs, have kept supply growth down. Gross: What is the long-term real return on gold? Investors are always fascinated as it moves up 5% or 10%, but you never get any income.
